SHOULD A JUDGE BE RETAINED OR NOT? A Quick Guide For Your Ballot

Whenever I am faced with the decisions on my ballot about the retention of judges, I used to just stare blankly and try to remember if I had read anything in the newspapers or seen some news report on television about any of the judges I needed to vote on. Was there some big trial? Do I even recognize any name? Who are these people? Are they doing their job? And I always felt like I should just maybe vote to retain them because I never wanted someone just kicked off the bench due to my vote that was based on no real knowledge.
If you are registered to vote, you received the “blue book” in the mail recently and if you go to page J-1, you can read in great detail about each of the judges that you must decide to retain or not retain. And you can feel good about yourself that your decision is based on knowledge and not just a big guess.

For those of you who might want a quick summary, I have taken the percentages from lawyers and non lawyers surveyed about each of the judges. These percentages represent the amount of lawyers and non lawyers who believe the judge should be retained or for Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, it is lawyers and judges who were surveyed. . But I still recommend you take a few minutes and read the blue book and really get to know your judges. You might be in one of their courtrooms someday.
