Lee Kemp elected to his fourth term as ChairDenver – The Regional Transportation District (RTD) Board of Directors elected officers for 2011 at their Board Meeting tonight and swore in four newly-elected Directors. The RTD is governed by a 15-member directly-elected policy Board of Directors. Here are the results of the five Board Officer elections:
Chair, Lee Kemp – This will be Director Lee Kemp’s fourth consecutive term as Chair. Lee Kemp was elected to the RTD Board of Directors in November of 2004 and re-elected in 2008 to a four-year term. He represents citizens in east Boulder, Broomfield, Adams and parts of Weld Counties. In 2008 he was elected as Chair of the RTD Board of Directors and re-elected again as Chair in 2009 and 2010.
Director Kemp is employed by Daimler Buses North America. He is a business degree candidate at Metropolitan State College of Denver. He is active in civic and professional organizations, past Chair for the TRB (Transit Research Board) Transit Committee (APO 35) and is a member of the Bus Equipment and Maintenance Committee and the Clean Propulsion and Support Technology Committee for the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). Director Kemp was appointed to the Denver Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper in December 2008.
Director Kemp’s civic works include acting as a Victim Advocate for the Broomfield Police Department, and he is a Board Member for Court-appointed Special Advocates for the 17th Judicial District. Mr. Kemp and his wife, Julie, have three children, Melissa, Stacie and James.
First Vice Chair, John Tayer – John Tayer joined the RTD Board in 2007 with over 14 years of experience working in the transportation policy arena, through both employment and volunteer positions. He was re-elected in November to a four year term.
Director Tayer first began work on efforts to enhance the regional transportation system in 1992 as the Intergovernmental Affairs Coordinator, and later Policy Director, in the Boulder City Manager’s Office. In 1999, after leaving the City Manager’s Office, Director Tayer joined Boulder’s Transportation Advisory Board (TAB). He served on TAB for five years, four years as Board Chair. Director Tayer also has been Chair of the Boulder East Transportation Management Organization and served on the City of Boulder Transportation Master Plan Task Force.
Director Tayer currently is employed as the Public Affairs and Communications Director for Roche Colorado, a pharmaceutical company in Boulder. In this position, he is the first point of contact for citizen and media inquiries regarding Roche Colorado activities and is the liaison to the company’s Community Advisory Panel. Director Tayer also sits on a number of local community boards, including the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, Avista Hospital, and the local non-profit recycling agency, Eco-Cycle.
A native of Brookline, Massachusetts, Director Tayer earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree from the University of Colorado. Director Tayer currently resides in Boulder's Table Mesa neighborhood with his wife Molly.
Second Vice Chair, Matt Cohen - Matt Cohen was elected to the RTD Board of Directors to a four- year term in November 2008. He represents District M, which includes Lakewood, Golden, and Wheat Ridge in central Jefferson County.
Director Cohen grew up in the Denver area, graduating from Denver’s East High School, then attended Cornell University and the University of Colorado at Denver.
Matt has been actively involved in the real estate industry for a number of years working as a real estate broker for the better part of a decade. He has served on a number of industry, as well as community boards, and as a director for organizations such as the Jefferson County Association of Realtors and the Metro Denver Realtor Foundation, among others. When not working, Director Cohen coaches youth soccer and is a long time volunteer with the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, as well as a happy member of the Wheat Ridge Optimist Club. Matt Cohen is married to Terri and they live in Lakewood, Colorado with their four children, Duncan, Jacob, Asher, and Chloe.
Secretary, Angie Malpiede - Director Angie Malpiede represents District C, which encompasses northwest Denver and parts of southern Adams County and eastern Jefferson County. Director Angie Malpiede was sworn in as Director for RTD District C on March 9, 2010. She was selected by Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and confirmed by the Denver City Council to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Director Juanita Chacon. She was elected in November to a four-year term.
Director Malpiede currently is employed as Director of the Stapleton Area Transportation Management Association. She manages the Sustainable Development initiative which includes advocacy and programs promoting alternative transportation methodologies for the Stapleton Foundation serving Stapleton (an urban redevelopment of the old Stapleton airport) and the existing neighborhoods which surround the old airport.
Prior to her position at Stapleton, Director Malpiede was the Marketing and Public Relations Director for Mi Casa Resource Center for Women which focused on advancing the economic success of Latino families. She was responsible for Mi Casa receiving more press than any other non-profit in the state of Colorado.
Director Malpiede served as Public Relations Coordinator working to connect communities of diversity at The Rocky Mountain News and served as Co-chair of the Diversity team. Director Malpiede worked with the Girl Scouts Mile Hi Council for twenty years where she
developed programs that served high-risk girls and those programs now serve as national
models. She also previously held the position of Public Relations and Fundraising Director for the Denver Center for Crime Victims which was created as a national model of victims’ assistance. The Center strives to provide culturally/linguistically appropriate services to meet the needs of their clients.
Director Malpiede’s community and professional associations include working extensively in the areas of community organizing, networking and marketing in the Denver area. She currently serves as Co-chair of the Living Streets Task Force and Vice President of the Greater Stapleton Business Association; she also serves on the East Side Mobility Plan Task Force and the Westerly Creek Greenway Master Plan Steering Committee. She previously served on the FasTracks Citizens Advisory Committee and the RTD Unlimited Pass Committee. Director Malpiede is an avid mass transit advocate and brings to the Board a strong passion to establish sustainable transportation options that are inclusive across socio-economic levels.
Treasurer, Kent Bagley - Director Kent Bagley was elected to the RTD Board of Directors in November 2008, to serve a four-year term. He represents District H which includes all or parts of the communities of Englewood, Littleton, Cherry Hills Village, Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, Columbine Valley and Lone Tree.
Director Bagley is an Urban Planner and Real Estate consultant with Bagley Development Consultants.
Director Bagley received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Denver in 1965 and his Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning & Community Development from the University of Denver in 1975.
Director Bagley has been a member of the Littleton Planning Commission for 4 ½ years with the last 2 ½ years as Chairman. He is married to Margi Clute.
The four new RTD Directors elected in November were sworn in tonight to officially start their four-year terms. The new Directors include:
Lorraine Anderson, District L, which covers north Jefferson County including Arvada and Golden. Director Anderson is retired from Anderson Tire Service Inc, a tire dealership that she co-founded specializing in commercial sales and services. She actively worked in the business which served the transportation and construction industries.
Director Anderson is very active in the community in both civic and political activities. She is a member of the Arvada Jefferson Kiwanis group. She also volunteers her time with Ginny Kid’s International which is an organization that receives recommendations from hospitals and other organizations for families experiencing emotional stress of a debilitating illness. Selected families and children are sent to Disneyland for a lasting memory. Ginny Kid’s International has helped over 300 families since its inception.
Additionally, Director Anderson is well known in the political arena having served 24 years on the Arvada City Council, including serving six years as Mayor Pro Tem. She was Board Chairman of the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) in 2004 and served on the DRCOG Board of Directors for over 17 years and represented DRCOG on the State Transportation Advisory Committee where she was elected co-chair. She is Past President of the Colorado Municipal League and served on the Executive Board for 13 years. She has served as member and Chair of numerous other committees including National League of Cities of Board of Directors, founding member of Rocky Flats Coalition of Local Governments, and Chair of Energy Communities Alliance. She served on the Environmental Management Advisory Board for the Department of Energy.
Director Anderson’s hobbies are golfing, hiking, fishing and travel. She has been married to Homer for 57 years and they are the proud parents of four adult children.
Barbara Deadwyler, District B, which includes northeast Denver and north Aurora. Director Deadwyler retired from Kaiser Permanente where she served in the capacity of Senior Project Consultant, Labor Management Partnership Consultant and Master Trainer. Barbara is active in the community and currently serves as secretary of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute and oversees the organization’s community outreach programs. Barbara has a long history in the labor movement.
Director Deadwyler is excited to be on the RTD Board representing the interest of all communities in District B. Her focus is on customer service and ensuring public transportation is accessible, convenient, safe and inclusive. Barbara has three adult children and nine grandchildren.
Larry Hoy, District J, which incorporates a large portion of Westminster, all of Federal Heights, and portions of Arvada, Northglenn, Thornton, as well as portions of unincorporated Adams and Jefferson County. Director Hoy received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of California. Upon graduation he worked in the transportation industry working in multiple states until his relocation to Colorado in 1980 where he served his company as President of its Colorado subsidiary. In the mid 1980’s he started his own company which he later sold to an international transportation company. Director Hoy is presently a Colorado Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser, a career which he began in the early nineties. He owns Paragon Appraisal Service located in Westminster.
Upon moving to Colorado, Director Hoy became very active in his community. He has been a member of the Adams County Economic Development Council, served on the Board of Directors of Metro North Chamber of Commerce, Bellco Credit Union, Frontier Airlines Credit Union, and the Westminster Rotary Club. He also served on the Westminster Planning Commission. Director Hoy is a graduate of Leadership Metro North and 50 for Colorado.
He has served on the Environmental Committee for the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry, and chaired the Adams County Political Action Committee. A supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, Director Hoy participated in fundraising projects for the Scouts. Larry and his wife Kathy of 39 years have two adult children and three grandchildren.
Ken Riley, District K, which includes parts of Thornton, Brighton, Northglenn, Commerce City, Federal Heights and unincorporated Adams County. Director Riley is currently employed as the Executive Director of Colorado’s American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. He is married with two young children and proud to call Adams County his home.
Directors Bruce Daly, Angie Malpiede and John Tayer were also sworn in tonight for their new four-year terms.
Bruce Daly, District N, which encompasses western Jefferson County including the mountains and the bulk of the county's unincorporated south western area.
Director Daly was born and educated in England and emigrated to the U.S. in 1969. He was a typesetter in the printing business and as this evolved into computerized desk-top publishing he decided to try another career. He became an operator for RTD in 1975. He retired from the District in 1995. During his period with RTD he was active within the Amalgamated Transit Union and sat on many labor/management committees.
After retiring, Director Daly became active in local party politics and was involved in many campaigns. Never truly retired, Director Daly drove for the call-n-Ride service in Evergreen and was employed as a Sergeant-at-Arms in the Colorado Senate.
He is married to Myrna and between them have four children and seven grandchildren.
