2010 Election Results

We had some great victories on Election Day. John Hickenlooper and Joe Garcia are
our new Governor and Lt. Governor-elect. Senator Michael Bennet was elected to
his first full term. U.S. Reps. Diana DeGette, Jared Polis and Ed Perlmutter will return to Washington, DC this fall to represent Colorado.

Congratulations to the Colorado State Senate which holds a majority with 20 seats. This election was hard-fought and each state senator played a role. Leadership in the Senate continues with Senator Brandon Shaffer as President.

The Colorado State House is one representative shy of the majority. We continue to review the votes for several house races. We will miss the wise counsel of Joe Rice, Sarah Gagliardi and Dennis Apuan. And we hope to discover the votes needed to bring back Debbie Benefield and Diane Primavera.

We also lost some fine public servants. U.S. Rep. John Salazar has served CD3 so well, and it is with deep sadness that he will not be returning to Washington. U.S. Rep. Betsy Markey really made her mark in Washington, DC for her constituents in CD4. Unfortunately the enormously negative campaign by outside groups spending millions of dollars resulted in Betsy’s loss.

What can we say about State Treasurer Cary Kennedy and Secretary of State Bernie Buescher? Cary’s careful stewardship of Colorado’s funds will be sorely missed. And the integrity that Bernie Buescher returned to the office of Secretary of State is also a great loss.

We had hoped to elect Stan Garnett as Attorney General and Melissa Hart to the position of CU Regent At-Large. Unfortunately that did not happen. However, both have emerged as shining stars of the Colorado Democratic Party.

Thank you to all the candidates who stepped forward to lead Colorado. Today we start anew.
